The market for China oil painting has been growing steadily since the mid 1990s and has seen rapid growth since 2003. This significant growth is due at least partly to an expanding customer base that includes young Chinese entrepreneurs, and underlines the increasing importance of oil paintings as a collection category. Analysts believe the prices of oriental paintings are generally much lower than those of Western art on oilpaintingfactory.com, and think that Chinese canvas price will keep rising in the near future, especially these high-quality paintings. At the first auction in the spring of 1994, a record for Asian paintings was set by Chen Yifei's “Shandi Feng”, which sold for 2.86 million RMB. Liu Chunhua's “Chairman Mao Going to Anyuan”, which sold for 6.05 million RMB, set the world record for Chinese art at that time. Many traditional painting collectors had turned to buying oriental paintings, thus helping to create a booming market.

His landscapes oil painting extend from Venice to the Chinese canals of his native Zhejiang Province. The critics said whatever the theme and style, the common aesthetic link behind all of Asian paintings is a commitment to beauty. The most fascinating part of his career has been his attempt to combine elements from his native country with the Western traditions of both realism and impressionism. Yifei Chen artwork does not fit easily into a "Chinese" or "Western" mold. Perhaps his art can be described as "multi-cultural" — not in the current sense of locking up a person in whatever ethnic group he was born into, but in the sense of combining the best of several cultures.
|One example of how girl portrait combines Chinese and Western elements can be found in is his painting Poppy. The title is that of an evening song by the Tang Dynasty poet Bo Zhuyi, which expresses the emotions of a young woman sadly pondering the uncertainty of the future. The figure of the woman, however, has the stable structure of an ancient Greek sculpture. Another example is Soirée, which depicts Chinese musicians in traditional garb but conveys a Western "carpe diem" atmosphere. Whatever the theme and the style, the common aesthetic link behind all of Asian paintings are a commitment to beauty. In the words of Lawrence Wu, Chen's paintings are "exquisite yet dignified, elegant and refined yet have heroic bearing". The oil painting Eulogy of the Yellow River, by the late artist and film director, Chinese artist, was sold for 40.32 million yuan (US$5.25 million) at Sunday's China Guardian 2007 Spring Auctions, to become the most expensive oil painting in China's auction history.|
